Rooftop Luxury at The Residence
There are boutique hotels and there are Boutique Hotels. The former is often secret code for a slightly glamorous B&B, with modest but stylish accommodation. The meaning of the latter is fully revealed at The Residence. Being driven through the Jacaranda-lined streets of Houghton in the hotel’s WiFi-enabled Rolls Royce, sipping a drink, is only the first step to understanding. Being discreetly greeted by the attentive, but unintrusive staff on arrival and not having to spare a thought for your luggage, is another.

But if you hadn’t gotten the hint by then, taking in the view above Jo’burg’s treetops from your private wooden deck outside the Penthouse suite, the Jacuzzi gurgling in the background, should drive the point home.
There are 12 luxury rooms and suites in all at The Residence, but if you’re aiming to impress, inspire or indulge with your romantic getaway, your only options either the Penthouse or the Madiba Suite. The Penthouse is nearly 200m2 of pure luxury, with ‘plush’ a poor descriptor for the décor. As if the sprawling deck didn’t offer good-enough views, there’s also a skylight above the bed for stargazing. Oh, and there’s a second, more private deck with outdoor bath and shower. There’s a formal seating area, fireplace and chandeliers around every corner. The Madiba suite is cozier – you’ll lose the treetop views, but gain extra, ultra-luxurious space. The Residence’s original brass & polished wood lift, now decommissioned, serves as a personal wine and champagne cellar. Make your selection there and settle down to dinner in the dining area on the deck. Dessert in the Jacuzzi is optional.

If you can tear yourself away from your suite, there are two spa options – again with the most ridiculous views – and a restaurant serving up edible art, which competes with the canvasses on every wall. Two pools – one heated – sit alongside the tennis court in gorgeous gardens which help give the impression that you couldn’t possibly be in the heart of Jo’burg. A Bar, a Piano Lounge and even a Boat Lounge – there are plenty of discreet corners in which to cozy up. Everywhere you go at The Residence, you’re surrounded by art, light and opulence. You’ll never be able to stay in a chain hotel again.
Penthouse stays are R4975 per night, while an evening in the Madiba Suite is priced at R5695. Luxury Rooms and Suites start at R3165 per night. The Residence
